Choose the length of the roof box

The lengths of the roof boxes range from 105 to 218 cm. To find the one that's right for you, you need to take into consideration the size of your car and its roof. The maximum length of a roof box that you then mount on your car must be equal to that of the roof. The mounted boot must allow the tailgate to open and should never go beyond the front part of the roof by more than 10/20 cm. The more the box protrudes from the front, the more the machine will run the risk of losing stability in case of strong winds. In addition to the aforementioned measures, your needs must also be taken into consideration. For long objects (snowboards, skis) you need a roof box at least 190 cm long. For bulky items (stroller, baby carrier) a compact or medium-capacity playpen is suitable. Compact and short playpens (from 315 to 370 litres) are the most suitable for small families and singles. The medium and large capacity boxes (from 400 to 530 litres) are the best sellers and are suitable for all types of cars, whether family cars, minivans, 4×4s, SUVs or sedans. Lastly, large capacity boxes (from 560 to 680 litres) are recommended for larger families

Before buying a box, it is necessary to make sure that the distance between the roof bars allows them to be mounted. The bigger the box
the more the bars need to be spaced apart. Generally it is possible to move the fixing hooks of the box to adapt them to the position of the bars within a certain range of spacing. In the table below, check the distance of the bars necessary for the assembly of the different models of the trunk

It should also not be forgotten to check the width of the bars, which, if it exceeds 6 cm, could lead to assembly problems on some trunks that use the "U" hook system.

The box, which opens on both sides, is particularly practical in the city for always loading and unloading from the curbside. This kind of opening also allows you to optimize the load of your box by filling the empty spaces on all 2 sides of the box evenly.

Closing system

As regards the closure, some boxes have a centralized system that provides an automatism that allows you to close the entire box by acting only on a lock. Other models, on the other hand, use a safety lock system which does not allow the key to be removed if the lock is not closed correctly, making it impossible to travel with the box open or to forget the key inside.

Maximum load

This is an important point! Normally the load on the roof should not exceed approx. 75 kg. It is advisable to check the data on the vehicle registration certificate of your car. When calculating the load on the roof, the weight of the box (from 10 to 20 kg) of the base support (5-6 kg) and the capacity of the bars (50-100 kg) must also be taken into account. Therefore, often around 35-50 kg remain for luggage.

Safety

All Farad roof boxes are TUV and City Crash approved.

Tuv is an Italian company that deals exclusively with certification and safety, its approval is necessary if you want to guarantee the customer a safe and high quality product.

The City Crash homologation instead provides for a specific test that simulates a head-on collision. The product undergoes which is equivalent to a load of 1000 kg on the surface of the car roof. To pass the test, the trunk must remain anchored to the bars.
